A native of California, Bishop Christensen, at the age of 23, moved to Minnesota and was ordained to the priesthood in May of 1985. He attended St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He served as a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Paul/ Minneapolis for 23 years, first as associate pastor of St. Olaf Parish in Minneapolis before becoming spiritual director (1989) and rector (1991) of St. John Vianney Seminary, located on the University of St. Thomas. He also served 8 years as Pastor of Nativity of Our Lord Church and School in St. Paul. On September 14, 2007, he was ordained Bishop of the Diocese of Superior. Bishop Christensen holds a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Applied Spirituality.
In January of 2009, he was named Episcopal Advisor to the USA Council of Serra International. In addition, he has served as a member of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth and the Priority Task Force on Faith Formation and Sacramental Practice. Now, in his second term, he serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Catholic Home Missions. He also serves on the USCCB Subcommittee on Native American Affairs.
